The System May Be Rubbish, But Rubbish Now Has Representation

Your Dose of Nice: Democracy may be in the bin, but the bin is polling extremely well.

Count Binface, a satirical political character portrayed by comedian Jonathan Harvey, received nearly 9,500 votes—about 27% of the total—in the Clacton parliamentary by-election. Reform UK leader Nigel Farage won with approximately 63% but did not attend the count. With Britain’s major parties declining to field candidates, Binface, dressed as an intergalactic warrior with a silver trash-can helmet, became Farage’s principal challenger and the most successful traditional comedy candidate in British electoral history. Reuters reported the result on August 14.

This is encouraging evidence that British democracy remains open to new forms of representation. For centuries, Parliament has welcomed aristocrats, lawyers, financiers, and men with unusually strong opinions about Europe. At last, the people of Clacton were offered an extraterrestrial waste-management professional.

Binface campaigned on policies including cutting voters’ taxes while raising everybody else’s and conscripting people who use speakerphones on public transportation. These proposals may sound frivolous, but both are more specific than “restore confidence,” “unlock growth,” and “deliver change.”

Farage won comfortably but declined to share the stage at the count, saying he would not permit his victory to be demeaned by “nobodies.” Binface, meanwhile, appeared in full ceremonial recycling attire and accepted the verdict. Britain was therefore offered two competing models of leadership: the victorious politician who stayed away and the defeated space warrior who showed up.

The result proves that democracy still works. A citizen paid a £500 deposit, placed a wastebasket on his head, proposed affordable ice cream, and persuaded more than one-quarter of participating voters that he was worth considering. The political establishment should not be alarmed. It should be checking whether the helmet comes in a larger size for fatter heads.
